Predictions for Washington Seahawks

By KAREN JACKSON | August 17, 2011

There were many changes in the offseason in the Great Northwest starting with the hiring of Coach Pete Carroll it was the Seahawks organization’s most significant move since 1999 when Mike Holmgren was hired out of Green Bay but there was no change at the top of the organization. This year, the turnover was more than just the sidelines. John Schneider became the team’s general manager, where he will work closely with Carroll. Seattle completed 5 trades this offseason, drafted eight rookies and acquired a total of more than 60 different players since Carroll became coach in January. More than a dozen of those players were cut before they made it to training camp. Will Seattle improve after going 9-27 the previous two seasons? That remains to be seen, but one thing that is certain is that this season will be different.

The 2010-11 offensive unit in will be led by quarterback Charlie Whitehurst who was the team’s first significant acquisition in the offseason, Whitehurst comes over for the San Diego Chargers. Matt Hasselback comes in as the incumbent but Whitehurst is the favorite to take over the job. The team has 3 good running backs in Julius Jones, Justin Forsett and Leon Washington who came over from the New York Jets and this sports handicapper believes Washington will be the game breaker for the team; he was very productive for the Jets.

Rookie tackle Russell Okung was taken with the 6th pick in this year’s draft and will make an immediate impact at the position. The wide receivers will all compete for starting job except for the teams leading receiver in 2009-10, T.J. Houshmandzadeh. There is talent of the defense with the linebackers being the most talented crew on the unit with Lofa Tatupu, LeRoy Hill and 2009 #1 draft pick Aaron Curry. The defensive backfield drafted Texas safety Earl Thomas late in the 1st round and he should step in right away and make an impact playing alongside Deon Grant. Cornerback Marcus Trufant is also very good. The defensive line is where the problem is for Seattle and Carroll will work hard to things happen.
